" The Henry Street Apartments create a rich and wonderful new layer for contemporary living within the heart of Fremantle. The architects demonstrate exceptional skilland maturityusing refined and direct detailing that overlays the new work with an existing heritage ruin. The apartments are carefully considered with an emphasis on the relationship between the interior and the site. Material and detailing isrestrained creating a strong formal quality with clarity and richness that ensured it was the clear winner in this category.

This project for a new building of 10 apartments and a commercial space, located within the historically significant “West End” of Fremantle, sought to integrate the ruin of the front wall of a C1890’s cottage, the only remaining structure on the site. The concept was to make confident and sensitive architecture within a significant heritage context that expresses continuity between the past, present and future.
The ruin has been reused in it’s found state as a screen, containing the space of the commercial tenancy behind it while two storeys of new building hover above, separated by a ribbon of frameless glass.
The rest of the building is clearly articulated as a contemporary form, addressing the aspirations and requirements of modern occupants for well designed spaces offering light, air, privacy, shading, security and car parking, while making the most of the roof top outlook.
The project directly engages the conservation issues associated with the site to embody a outstanding example of how heritage can be a positive contribution to new development, by conserving the Fremantle’s unique character while contributing to a more diverse, sustainable and vibrant city.
The project responds to townscape on a number of levels. At streetscape scale the development continues the built-to-the-street, parapet wall, three-storey height of the gold era buildings that characterise the West End. At the footpath scale the project conserves and protects the significant surviving fabric of the earlier colonial era, in a context that tells the story of the West End’s history and development from colonial/ federation/21century.
