At the outset spaceagency set about to find cues from the site and its surrounds that could inform the design of our building and could result in an enhancement of the sense of place of the site. There is an obvious and direct visual connection between the southern portion of Lot 3 and the North Warf of Fremantle Harbour. The harbour infrastructure dominates and characterises the southern end of Leighton Beach, its vibrancy is a source of interest and fascination for a significant portion of people who live in and visit Fremantle. It is a keystone to Fremantle’s identity.
Along with oil storage tanks and cranes, stacks of shipping containers are one of the wharf’s most enduring images. There is an immediate and tangible parallel of scale and form between the stacks of empty sea containers and apartment building typology. We adopted this image as a touchstone that would possibly inform our building with qualities of the place and began to play with the proportions of sea containers and the idea of “stacking” to develop an architectural expression.
