The Lumper street project is a two-storey gallery addition to house an extensive private art collection, and some internal alterations to the existing house.
The first floor gallery floats over the ground like a bridge between the two ends of the “u” shaped plan of the existing house, creating a cloistered courtyard between the two.
The sheltered courtyard opens up to the existing dining room and remodelled kitchen and flows into the ground floor sculpture gallery.
The steel framed and clad structure contrasts with the limestone block of the existing house and gives the addition a sense of lightness.
The folded inclined planes of the gallery roof and walls move the gallery space away from a straight box to a sculpted room with natural light entering from above, at floor level and a louvred window which leans out to take in a glimpse of the ocean.
