Waikiki Village Cafe'
Commercial
Waikiki Shopping Center, Waikiki
1997
Set within a ‘village’ context of a large suburban shopping centre the new kiosk attempts to act as an extension of the already eclectic nature of shopfronts presented to patrons, although not similar or identifiable with the centre and its wider context.
A timber box, twisted to conform to traffic flows within the centre, sits beneath and around the centre’s focus, a tower which projects through the roof and acts as a symbol, a sign. Piercing this volume is another box of stainless steel, the mechanics of the kiosk - coolroom, kitchen and scullery areas. From this composition of two simple elements spaces as carved to produce four distinct faces. Three facades provide a hybrid of cuisines; Asian, Hot carvery and Continental addressing the centre’s main court while the last, the service face fronts onto the carpark.
